I\u2019ve given a lot of thought to this issue since my garden lost 4 large oaks which were living here before I moved into the shade they kindly provided me.<\/p>\n<p>Following the storm, <a href=\"http:\/\/treebelievers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">my arborist Ron Strauss of Tree Believers<\/a>, (631-864-5514) sent his newsletter , \u201cThe Root of the Matter\u201d, with recommendations of what to and what not to replant. Here is what he said:<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that <b>you do not re-plant<\/b> using the following species of trees (all commonly planted in LI landscapes) that did not endure the storms well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emerald Green Arborvitae<\/li>\n<li>Linden<\/li>\n<li>Crabapple<\/li>\n<li>Leyland Cypress<\/li>\n<li>White Pine<\/li>\n<li>Red Oak<\/li>\n<li>Norway or Crimson King Maple<\/li>\n<li>Flowering Pear<\/li>\n<li>Douglas Fir<\/li>\n<li>Weeping Willow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now to the question of <b>planting recommendations<\/b> his list included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sycamore<\/li>\n<li>Sugar maple<\/li>\n<li>Magnolia<\/li>\n<li>Beech<\/li>\n<li>White Oak<\/li>\n<li>Magnolia<\/li>\n<li>Sweetgum<\/li>\n<li>Blackgum<\/li>\n<li>Baldcypress<\/li>\n<li>Dawn Redwood<\/li>\n<li>Dogwood<\/li>\n<li>Green Giant Arborvitae<\/li>\n<li>Gingko<\/li>\n<li>Holly<\/li>\n<li>Cryptomeria<\/li>\n<li>Katsuratree<\/li>\n<li>Weeping Cherry<\/li>\n<li>Hollywood Juniper<\/li>\n<li>Crape Myrtle<\/li>\n<li>Chamacyparis<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hawthorne<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For our smaller gardens, trees that I recommend and have or will be planting are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Dogwood<\/i> \u2018Stellar Pink\u2019 (this is one of the disease resistant Rutgers hybrids) 15-30\u2019 ht &amp; spread. Pink flowers in early summer.<\/li>\n<li><i>Stewartia pseudocamellia var. koreana<\/i>. Quite slow growing 30\u2019ht, 20\u2019 spread. Decorative bark. White flowers in early summer. Single or multi-trunk.<\/li>\n<li><i>Heptacodium miconoides<\/i>, Seven-son flower. (recommended by<a href=\"http:\/\/gardenforeplay.avantgardensne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Katherine Tracey of Avant Gardens<\/a>) 15-20\u2019 ht by 8-10\u2019 spread. Full sun.
